FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: How would you describe your shooting and editing style?
A: Hawaii is beautiful, and people are beautiful, so I try to keep things as natural as possible in bringing out the beauty that is already there when my clients + Hawaii come together! My editing style is designed to be timeless and attempts to preserve an as-if-you-were-there type of look, with a little added punch of eye-catching vibrance. After all to me, this is why you opt to do a photo session in Hawaii in the first place, to capture its stunning beauty!
Q: How long have you been a photographer?
A: I never know quite how to answer this one because the transition from exclusively shooting surf and scenic photography to shooting portrait photography was a VERY gradual one! Since I was a kid, I’ve always loved capturing photos of beautiful scenery and shooting waves and friends/family in the surf, a passion that has continued throughout my life into adulthood. Sometime circa 2015, I had an admirer of my surf photography ask me if I also shoot portraits. In my head, I thought, “ummm NO!!” But, I decided to give it a try, ended up liking it a lot more than I imagined I would, and have been shooting and progressing within the portrait genre ever since. I’ve been taking it very seriously as a profession since about 2017, and have been continuously honing my skills and building my full-time photography business since that time.
Q: Where do you shoot your photo sessions?
A: I shoot at many different outdoor locations all over the island of Oahu. Being native Hawaiian and having grown up here, I have in-depth knowledge of lots of different locations and their unique nature, which aids in helping you pick the perfect location for your needs. I also occasionally travel to the other islands, as well as the U.S. mainland for photo sessions!
Q: What time of day would our session be?
A: In my experience, the best times of day for lighting are generally just after sunrise and just before sunset, with some locations being better for one or the other due to geography of the island (proximity to sunrise/sunset, steep mountains blocking the sun, etc.). Shooting at these times of day tends to produce softer, more pleasant lighting, avoiding the harsh, less flattering lighting toward the middle part of the day, and also produces more vibrant colors and stunning sunrises and sunsets.
**Sidenote - if you’re visiting Oahu and are concerned about getting up for an early morning session, keep in mind that the time zone change will likely have you up VERY early for the first few mornings you are here (3:00 or 4:00am is not uncommon!), making it a lot easier than you may realize. This can actually make it easier for children vs. a sunset session when unadjusted kids get cranky earlier than usual!
Q: What if it rains? What if I need to reschedule or cancel due to unexpected changes to my schedule or travel plans?
A: In keeping with my philosophy of simplicity and making things as easy as possible for my clients, I offer an unlimited free rescheduling policy, in case of bad weather or other unexpected circumstances that may pop up. I also offer a full refund guarantee, in case you need to cancel for any reason. Both of these policies are outlined in my photo session service agreement, which you will receive at the time of booking.
Q: What if we have no experience in front of a camera, or have shy/awkward individuals in our group?
A: Not to worry! I will guide you every step of the way and make your session a fun, easy, and painless experience!
(And believe it or not, I’m a big introvert who doesn’t enjoy being in front of the camera, so I totally get it and can empathize, while also using my experience as a seasoned photographer to help you feel comfortable!)
Q: I have some theme or posing ideas I’ve compiled that I want to incorporate into my session, is that ok?
A: Yes, absolutely! I love combining my creative vision with that of my clients in making sure you get all of the photos you want during your session!
Q: Is there a limit to the number of individuals we can have present for our session?
A: No not at all! While many photographers charge extra for individuals in the group over a certain number, I never do. Families and groups come in varying sizes, and I don’t believe that that should feel like a penalty! Everyone you want captured in your photo memories is welcome!
Q: Can I utilize my session for more than one type of photography need I may have?
A: Yes, absolutely! In keeping with my philosophy of simplicity, I’m more than happy to shoot whatever you need within the allotted time we have for your session. I regularly have clients who need both family + maternity photos, family + graduation photos, sneak some headshots within a family session or even a wedding, etc. Happy to do it!
Q: Do you perform major digital alterations in your editing process to fix scenery, backgrounds, body modifications, etc.?
A: Yes and no. I try to keep my scenery as natural yet vibrant as possible, which begins by selecting locations and times of day that will yield the best possible natural results (also see my approach to editing style above). I don’t do things like swap fake skies (MANY photographers do this, looks super unnatural) or add other background elements that weren’t originally there. I do, however, try to remove unnecessary, distracting and unappealing elements such as poles, signs, people in the background, etc. I also try to do minor corrections on subjects such as fixing acne and other blemishes, excessively wind blown hair, etc. These are done with permission/by request as I try not to automatically assume the client wants these fixes. I don’t do alterations to body morphology, however, as this usually tends to look worse than the original, unless done by a professional digital artist.
Q: How will I receive my photos and is there a print release included?
A: Your photos will be delivered in full resolution digital format via online gallery, from which you can download and save your images (I try to keep backup copies of your images indefinitely). The resolution of your images will be more than sufficient for any typical printing situations that 99.9% of people will need. And yes, a print release is included and you may use your photos in any way that you’d like!
Q: What is your turnaround time?
A: In most instances, sessions will be edited, processed, and your photos delivered to you in 7-10 days (generally around 2 weeks for weddings). If you urgently need some or all of your images sooner than that, I may be able to expedite some or all of your session upon request. Note: turnaround times may be longer during certain times of year (e.g. - holiday season, during vacations, etc.). Where this is the case, I will do my best to let you know in advance and give you an estimate on turnaround time, with the option for expedited sneak peeks in a reasonably short amount of time.
